The Hubble Space Telescope has provided a detailed look at NGC 4654, an intermediate spiral galaxy situated 72 million light-years away within the Virgo Cluster. The galaxy, which features a faint central bar, displays a distinct lopsided appearance characterized by a sharp, compressed leading edge and a trailing gaseous tail.
Astronomers attribute this distortion to a combination of two primary forces. As NGC 4654 travels at high speeds through the Virgo Cluster, it encounters the hot, thin gas of the intracluster medium. This interaction, known as ram pressure stripping, compresses the galaxy's leading edge and pulls its gas outward. Additionally, researchers believe the galaxy's uneven distribution of stars is the result of a gravitational encounter with the neighboring galaxy NGC 4639 approximately 500 million years ago, which disrupted star formation on one side of the structure.
Despite these external pressures, NGC 4654 continues to produce stars at a rate similar to other galaxies of its size, generating nearly two solar masses of new stars annually. Recent Hubble observations, which captured light emitted by energized gas clouds, highlight these active star-forming regions as bright pink bubbles scattered across the galaxy's disk and spiral arms.
This imaging is part of a broader scientific effort to map the relationship between galactic gas and star formation. By studying nearby galaxies, researchers aim to determine the mechanisms that trigger gas collapse and the subsequent impact of newborn stars on their surrounding environments.
