The Hubble Space Telescope has captured a detailed view of NGC 4654, an intermediate spiral galaxy situated 72 million light-years away in the Virgo Cluster. The galaxy, which features a weak central bar, exhibits a distinctively lopsided appearance characterized by a sharp, compressed edge on one side and an extended tail of gas trailing behind it.
Scientists attribute this asymmetry to a phenomenon known as ram pressure stripping. As NGC 4654 travels at high velocity through the dense, hot gas of the Virgo Cluster, the resulting pressure compresses its leading edge and strips away gas from the opposite side. This process has created a notable imbalance in the distribution of both gas and stars within the galaxy.
While ram pressure accounts for the gaseous tail, researchers believe the galaxy's uneven stellar distribution stems from a past gravitational interaction. Approximately 500 million years ago, a fly-by encounter with the neighboring galaxy NGC 4639 is thought to have disrupted NGC 4654, further contributing to its irregular shape and limiting star formation in certain regions.
Despite these external pressures, NGC 4654 maintains a robust star formation rate, producing the equivalent of nearly two solar masses annually. Hubble’s latest observations highlight this activity through bright pink regions of energized gas, signaling the presence of newborn stars across the galaxy's disk and spiral arms. These findings are part of broader research efforts to understand the lifecycle of gas and star formation in galaxies.
