A hybrid-electric engine, developed through a partnership between NASA and GE Aerospace, has successfully completed a demonstration flight at the Farnborough International Air Show in the United Kingdom. The propulsion system, mounted on a Saab 340B aircraft, represents a major advancement in the effort to develop more efficient, lower-cost power systems for regional-class jets.

The flight follows a series of historic tests, including the first instance of a hybrid-electric aircraft operating above 30,000 feet. The engine combines a gas turbine with electric motors and energy storage, a configuration designed to reduce fuel consumption and operating expenses without compromising aircraft performance.

This milestone is the result of over 15 years of research, drawing on initiatives such as the Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration and the Subsonic Vehicle Technologies and Tools project. Development included extensive ground testing at NASA’s Electric Aircraft Testbed in Sandusky, Ohio, where the system was evaluated under conditions simulating high-altitude flight.

"This achievement reflects what NASA does best in aeronautics: we explore bold possibilities, validate them through rigorous research and testing, and work with industry to turn breakthrough ideas into technologies that bring real value for the American people," said Laurie Grindle, director of the Aeronautics Division at NASA Headquarters.

Ralph Jansen, an aerospace engineer at NASA’s Glenn Research Center, noted that the project overcomes significant engineering challenges that once seemed impossible. The technology is intended to inform future generations of aircraft, potentially transforming how large passenger and cargo planes are powered.
