Karen Barrett, an assistant professor at the University of California, San Francisco, led a study utilizing fMRI technology to observe how children engage with music when asked to create their own melodies.
The study compared brain activity when children played a memorized scale versus when they improvised. Researchers observed that, unlike the activation patterns seen in adult jazz musicians—who often engage the medial prefrontal cortex to project an artistic voice—children primarily exhibited deactivation across various sensory hubs in the brain. Barrett suggests these areas may represent the foundational development of the brain's adult creativity network.
A significant finding from the research was that improvisation triggered reward structures in the children's brains more effectively than playing memorized scales. This result was not as prominently observed in previous studies of professional jazz musicians, suggesting that the capacity for creative expression may be an innate human trait rather than a skill solely acquired through years of formal training.
Barrett notes that these findings underscore the inherent value of artistic engagement for brain health.
